CONDITIONING PERIODISATION WORKSHOP

The third workshop, Conditioning Periodisation covers the following content:

– Periodisation types
– Conditioning periodisation
– What can team sports learn from endurance sports?
– Pre-season vs. in-season conditioning
– AFL team pre-season conditioning periodisation case study
– AFL team off-season conditioning periodisation case study
– AFL team conditioning prescription examples
– Endurance athlete conditioning prescription examples
– HIIT prescription examples

Conditioning periodisation in team sports

Once you have laid the foundations of your conditioning knowledge by watching the first two conditioning workshops, you should be au fait with the following:

  • What Maximal Aerobic Speed (MAS) is
  • Which aerobic fitness test you should use to determine Maximal Aerobic Speed
  • Objective running conditioning prescription
  • What is high intensity interval training (HIIT)
  • HIIT vs. other conditioning types (continuous, fartlek, cross training)
  • Why HIIT is so effective at improving aerobic fitness
  • Conditioning methods to improve aerobic fitness (continuous, fartlek & high intensity interval training)
  • HIIT prescription (mode, intensity, volume, recovery type & W:R ratio)
  • Using Maximal Aerobic Speed to prescribe HIIT
  • HIIT interventions & case studies

With the above information now firmly entrenched in your strength and conditioning repertoire, it is integral to develop a greater understanding of how to plan and periodise your conditioning. This is integral irrespective of whether you are prescribing conditioning for endurance athletes or team sport athletes.

The latter scenario with team sport groups is generally considered more complex as it often presents a myriad of issues for coaches and practitioners to navigate. This stems from the need to balance the teams technical and tactical sport training alongside their conditioning program.

As such, this is the basis for the third and final conditioning workshop, which focuses on conditioning periodisation. In this workshop there is a specific focus on team sport pre-season and in-season conditioning programs, with an actual AFL conditioning program case study used to depict the intricacies of conditioning periodisation. This case study whilst specific to Australian Rules Football has relevance to other team sports, such as GAA, soccer, hockey and rugby pre-season training programs.

Building on your conditioning foundations

The importance of being able to appropriately plan and periodise your conditioning program alongside other training stressors, such as technical and tactical team training and strength training is imperative as it provides you with the best possible opportunity to mitigate injury risk and maximise performance.

The above is only possible once you have developed your conditioning knowledge foundations via the Aerobic Fitness Testing & Maximal Aerobic Speed Determination and High Intensity Interval Training & Conditioning Prescription workshops, so I would recommend watching them prior to watching the conditioning periodisation workshop. This is underpinned by knowing the what and how in relation to aerobic fitness testing and conditioning prescription, with the conditioning periodisation workshop centred on the planning and application of conditioning across both pre-season and in-season phases.

The workshop specifically covers when certain types of conditioning be used in your periodised plan, and what are the technical and tactical considerations that impact your conditioning prescription. These are critically important contextual questions that have a profound impact on the planning and prescription of pre-season or in-season periods (i.e. AFL pre-season training programs & GAA pre-season training programs).

Conditioning periodisation case studies & AFL team examples

In addition to the covering different periodisation types and conditioning periodisation, the workshop presents to coaches and practitioners specific and real life conditioning periodisation examples across pre-season and off-season phases. These examples and case studies offer a unique insight in elite level conditioning application, whilst also providing a terrific learning opportunity for coaches and practitioners.

Given the complexities associated with conditioning and HIIT periodisation and prescription, there is also a particular emphasis on presenting conditioning prescription examples for team sports (i.e. AFL team) and elite endurance athletes. The diversity of these examples highlights the breadth of application for objectively guided conditioning and MAS interval training (i.e. AFL pre-season training programs & GAA pre-season training programs)
